Position clues become easier when you separate formal positions from tactical roles. A goalkeeper is a position; a sweeper-keeper describes how that position may be played.
Start from the team sheet
Goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and forward are the broad families. Full-back, center-back, winger, and striker narrow the role.
- Count the entry length.
- Check whether the clue is singular.
- Distinguish a role from a formation number.
Read spatial words literally
Wide, central, holding, attacking, and false are tactical modifiers. In a clue they often carry more information than the generic word player.
- Wide suggests flank roles.
- Holding points toward midfield responsibility.
- False usually signals movement away from a nominal line.
Handle regional language
Soccer and football communities may use different labels for similar ideas. Let crossings choose between alternatives instead of assuming one vocabulary.
- Expect back versus defender.
- Treat keeper as goalkeeper shorthand.
- Do not force American positional language into association football.
