Formation clues often look numerical, but the answer may be a role, a line, or the coach associated with a shape. First identify what the clue actually requests.
Read the numbers by lines
A formation string describes outfield lines from defense forward; the goalkeeper is normally omitted. Hyphens may disappear in a crossword entry.
- Count outfield players to ten.
- Do not add the goalkeeper.
- Normalize punctuation only after solving.
Separate shape from style
A shape does not prove pressing, possession, or counterattacking. If a clue asks for a style, formation numbers alone are insufficient.
- Use tactical verbs as signals.
- Avoid stereotypes about a formation.
- Let named roles narrow the answer.
Use crossings for variants
The same basic setup can be written with different line breaks. Crossings help distinguish a compact midfield notation from a flatter one.
- Check the expected character count.
- Preserve the clue’s line grouping.
- Confirm that the numbers total ten.
