Matchday localizes product copy, but crossword clues and answers remain in English for grid consistency. A few language habits make that boundary easier.
Separate interface and grid language
Navigation can follow the device language while the puzzle maintains one clue corpus. Treat English as the grid convention, not a claim that football has one vocabulary.
- Learn common clue verbs.
- Keep local proper names intact.
- Use the interface context to orient yourself.
Build a small synonym bank
Ground and stadium, keeper and goalkeeper, draw and tie, and other regional pairs can appear differently in clue language.
- Record both variants.
- Use entry length and crossings.
- Prefer the clue’s register.
Normalize only inside the grid
Spaces, punctuation, and accents may be omitted for entry mechanics. Outside the grid, use the proper display name.
- Check the clue story after solving.
- Preserve accents in notes.
- Do not treat normalization as translation.
