Club clues can appear simple until multiple teams share a city, nickname, or abbreviated form. Treat the entry as an identity problem.
Determine the expected unit
The answer might be a city, the distinctive club word, initials, or a full short name. Crossings expose which segment the grid wants.
- Count letters without spaces.
- Check whether initials are signaled.
- Do not assume the city alone.
Use competition and era
League, continental competition, and historical era sharply reduce ambiguity between clubs with similar names.
- Note the named competition.
- Use the clue’s season marker.
- Check whether the club has changed name.
Respect local spelling
Diacritics may be removed in a grid, but the article or clue note should preserve the proper display form.
- Display the official name outside the grid.
- Explain normalization once.
- Use crossings for transliterated variants.
